My Diet

Oct 22nd, 2007 | By Jeff | Category: Health

If you want to keep track of how I am doing on my diet you can check out my public profile over on Gyminee at: http://www.gyminee.com/locker_room/3435

So far I have been doing well with my new diet. Granted I am only in day 4 of the diet, but I want to feel some victory at the beginning of this week, so I guess I am gloating a bit.

I am going to the Gym Monday through Friday at 5:30am and using the Elliptical Machine for 30 minutes. I may add some more routines once this is not completely exhausting to me, or I may just keep trying to get more distance out of my 30 minutes.

But the biggest change for me is actually what I am eating.

Here are my Maximum values of intake for the day:
Calories: < 1500
Fat: < 50g
Carbohydrates: < 150g
Protein: > 50g

GymineeOver the last three days I have been logging the foods I am eating on a website called Gyminee. I am seeing how easily it is to far exceed normal amounts of calories, fat, and carbohydrates. I would estimate that on a typical day I used to eat somewhere near 4,000 - 5,000 calories per day. I munched a lot. And most of the time I would munch more than one serving of something. So changing the way I am eating is huge. And what I am finding is that by eating some different foods, I am certainly not going hungry. I am just eating smaller portions, and different foods. Jaime has done an excellent job finding foods that I actually like.

However, I have found some foods that I absolutely need to warn everyone to stay away from.
- Veggie Dogs. These are absolutely disgusting, and to be honest they are not that much more healthy than a regular hotdog. My advice, if you need a hotdog just eat a real Nathans hotdog. Forget the Veggie version. My dog wouldn’t even eat it.
- Quiznos. Health wise, they are far less healthy than subway. And their salads are no more healthy than their sandwiches. If I were to eat my typical sandwich at Quiznos (The Turkey Ranch & Swiss) I would not be able to eat anything else the entire day. Literally nothing. That one sandwich takes me to the top of all of my levels for fat and carbohydrates. Crazy. Crazy I tell you.

And let me leave you by sharing one surprisingly good item.
Mashed Cauliflower- Mashed Cauliflower. Add just a dab of sour cream and it is really similar to mashed potatoes.

  1. Wow. It is interesting stuff. I have been also watching what I eat over the last few years. I have made some adjustments to my diet as well. I have started eating a lot more vegetables and trying to limit my greasy meat intake. I also take vitamins everyday. I take flaxseed oil, a daily multi-vitamin, and folic acid supplement. I didn’t really used to care what I ate, but now that I have a child I started to rethink things. It is also significant because I am a steward of the body that god has given me and I want to take good care of it. Flaxseed oil has essential fatty acids and DHA which are good for heart health and other things I hear (i.e. anti-oxidents).

I take the multi vitamin just for the other vitamins, and the folic acid for it’s promotion of cell building.

  2. Lately I also have been researching what is in our water. It would amaze you the nasty things in our water. A few months ago we bought a water distiller and the water we get from it tastes so pure it is crazy.

We had always used a water filter, but it was just a charcoal faucet mount filter that did not filter out a number of substances. One of these substances is fluoride. They add it to the water to (allegedly) strengthen teeth. In seeking the origins of this I learned that the original person that started this wanting to add flouride to water was an owner of an aluminum mine. the process of mining aluminum produces fluoride, so the owners of the mine learned that they could sell the fluoride and be killing two birds with one stone. They get rid of the byproduct, and they obtain money for it. Studies in areas of fuoridation and non-fuoridated areas have also shown that there is no difference in the rate of cavities.

There are a great number of chemicals in our water. There are labs where you can have your water tested and see what exactly is in the water. We really enjoy the ease of use from our water distiller and feel good knowing the water is pure and free of contaminates. It is as easy as running a coffee maker and gives water that is 99.9 % pure. We chose this over the reverse osmosis system, because for every gallon of water used in reverse osmosis several gallons are discarded. Also, with distallation there is not the costly filters and the water quality is more pure and consistent.

Drinking water is also a great way to help you lose weight , because you feel more full when you are drinking more water. Water also helps balance out the sodium level in the body so drinking more water helps you know that you don’t have to worry as much about your sodium intake.

Anyways.. enough rambling, but definately something to look into. I think it is the best investment we have made in awhile. At the very least it is cheap to buy a faucet mounted charcoal filter.
